Discovering Otterspool 

Friends, who have recently moved up to the Merseyside area, introduced me to an part of Liverpool that I had never heard of before, despite being in the vicinity for work on a number of occasions.

Otterspool flanks the Liverpool side of the River Mersey, just to the south of the city. Its promenade has beautiful views across the river and is a great place for a winter stroll to blow away the cobwebs (it would be lovely at other times of the year too, but possibly with more people). There were only a few visitors on the day I visited.

For families and children there is an Action Sports Hub (skateboarding, BMX and scooters), a playground, an Adventure Centre with climbing, abseiling and high ropes and Otterspool Park.

We visited on a cold, blustery winter's day and easily parked up in one of the riverside car parks before bracing the elements for a wind blasted walk along the promenade.

I was amazed as the seagulls, flying into the wind, seemed to hover at the side of me. The effort to make progress must have been exhausting. It meant that I was able to capture some photos as they struggled to fly past.

The river was choppy with the wind, and buoys bobbed about in the water looking like miniature sailing boats.

Along the promenade are information boards giving the history of Otterspool.  Looks like there must have been otters there at some point in time, but none seen on this day.

Further along the promenade we came across anchors forming a sculpture as we walked towards Liverpool docks.

I visited in mid to late afternoon so enjoyed seeing the sun begin to set across the river. The blustery weather caused clouds to race across the sky adding interest and excitement to the scene.

I was delighted with the Otterspool discovery, what a grand place to spend an hour or two in the fresh air!
