A circular walk from Ambleside to Wansfell Pike and Troutbeck

There are a couple of ways to start this walk, the one we selected starts from the south end of Ambleside town where you take Old Lake Road then turn to the left up Blue Hill Road.

The start of the walk

Stay on this road passing a few houses until it turns into a track at the edge of woods.  Bear left along the side of the woods and follow the footpath up to Wansfell Pike.  Turn right to follow the path up the fell, there is a well defined path with steps.

Head up the fell to Wansfell Pike

This last stretch is quite steep, but when you reach the top the views are delightful in all directions. Windermere can be seen to one side and the Coniston Fells, the Langdale Pikes and much of the Fairfield Horseshoe to the other.

The actual top of Wansfell Pike is through the gate in the fence at the top, not marked with a cairn. The photo at the top of the page is taken from there.

After admiring the views, head down the other side of the fell towards Troutbeck, keeping Windermere to your right.  The path is easy to follow, go through one gate in a wall and then, at the next gate, turn right down Nanny Lane which leads to Troutbeck.

At this point refreshments might be needed.  As Nanny Lane reaches the road, turn left for The Mortal Man pub for beers, hot drinks, lunches and a nice garden to sit in. Alternatively, turn right for the Post Office, which serves good coffee and cakes, further through the village.

The walk continues to the right, down through the village, passing three wells on the right; Margaret's Well, St James' Well and St John's Well.

Pass the telephone box and continue to the Post Office.  Look out for the old sign on the corner of the building indicating the footpath to Ambleside.

Turn to the right up Robin Lane and follow this to return to Ambleside via Skelghyll Woods. The lane now has views with Windermere on your left side.

Once in the woods look out for a sign for Jenkins Crag where there is a good viewpoint over Windermere.

Follow the footpath in Skelghyll Woods and at one point where the path splits stay to the right to keep on the level.  At the end of the woods the path becomes a lane and following this will bring you back to into Ambleside along Old Lake Road. Soon you will be back at the start of the walk.
