An escape from reality with Doctor Strange

Venturing out on a winter's night can be quite an eye-opener, the temperature was a few degrees above freezing yet many Saturday night revellers were wandering around in short dresses, with bare backs, tottering heels and no coats (the girls) and shirtsleeves, no jackets (the boys). I, on the other hand, was wrapped in a fleece with gloves on and scarf tucked in!
The market square in Newcastle-under-Lyme was bedecked with Christmas lights and the Guildhall looked particularly splendid.
We were in town to go to see Doctor Strange at the Vue Cinemas. Having collected our tickets there was time for a quick drink but the pub we liked was closed so time for somewhere new.
We stuck our noses into Fallon's Bar and were beckoned in by a couple of friendly faces. Soon we were enjoying our beers by candlelight and admiring the pattern made on the ceiling by the light shades over the tables.
Thirsts quenched we headed back to Vue for the film. I'm sure most people have seen this by now, it is a Marvel Comics story about an eminent neurosurgeon, Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who has to deal with the after effects of a terrible car crash. In looking for ways to heal himself he stumbles across The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and a hefty dose of mysticism and altered dimensions. I don't believe in spoiling the plot for those who haven't seen this so I won't give any more away, just to say it is an enjoyable film, sprinkled with humour, some great CGI and a wonderful cameo by the Marvel Comics author, Stan Lee. I have to admit my favourite bits include the red cloak, but I'll say no more.
After our fill of extra dimensional excitement we next headed to Pasta di Piazza for a fill of some fresh spaghetti. Christmas celebrations were in full swing, lots of groups of friends and work colleagues were making the most of the festivities, crackers pulled, party hats askew, and even more of those strappy dresses and impossible heels. Merry Christmas...
